Student spotlight: Maame Akua Kome-Mensah

Maame Akua Kome-Mensah graduated this year with a B.S. in symbolic systems and a minor in global studies, with a specialization in African studies.

For her minor capstone project, she traveled to Africa to learn about the publication of young adult fiction in Ghana. “I learned so much by hanging out with talented and talkative writers and influencers in Accra,” she said. “The young writers I met are writing in a plethora of languages and through different media so their stories can reach anyone who is interested in hearing what they have to say.”

During her time at Stanford, Maame explored her diverse interests in literature, technology, and philosophy by taking a wide variety of classes from across the humanities and sciences. Her minor in African studies has changed her “understanding of knowledge and its purpose … in shaping the world,” she said. “The minor has also taught me that there are a thousand ways to analyze and view culture, development, or social situations.”

After graduation, Maame is looking forward to starting her career with global management consulting firm Bain & Company in San Francisco. Congratulations Maame, and best of luck!
