We're pleased to invite you to a conversation with Prof. Prathama Banerjee. We will begin with a brief discussion of Banerjee's most recent book, Elementary Aspects of the Political (Duke UP 2020). The book interrogates concepts with universal pretensions from a Global South perspective, disassembling "the modern political into four elementary aspects—subject, act, idea, and people." From there, Banerjee will present new work on the relationship between law and economics. To close, we will have space for a discussion between Banerjee and audience members.

This presentation is sponsored by Stanford Global Studies through its workshop series "Law and Literature in the Global South," which aims to broaden the horizons of the Law and Humanities critical paradigm. It is co-sponsored by "In Search of Epistemic Justice: A Tentative Cartography," a research group that explores epistemic inequality in various cultural, historical, and geopolitical contexts, as well as within the academy.

On our distinguished speaker: Prathama Banerjee, Professor at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies in Delhi, India, is a historian and political theorist. Among her many publications are books such as Politics of Time: 'Primitives' and History-writing in a Colonial Society and Elementary Aspects of the Political: Histories from the Global South

The session will take place on Thursday, February 9, 2023.

Given the time zone difference, we will start early (7:00 am PST; 8:30 IST). Please refer to the following website if you're in a different time zone: https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/converter.html?iso=20230209T150000&p1=176&p2=1240
