SGS Course Innovation Awards

Develop New Courses in Global and Regional Issues

Stanford Global Studies (SGS) is once again inviting proposals for Course Innovation Awards to support the development of courses focused on substantive topics of regional or global interest. This year, we are especially interested in supporting courses that can be offered through the new first-year Civic, Liberal, and Global Education Requirement (COLLEGE)

SGS has played an integral role in helping design and launch the new COLLEGE program, which requires first-year students to take courses focused on the themes of Citizenship, Liberal Education, and Global Perspectives. It aims to engage students in a purposeful study of liberal education and challenge them to examine their roles as global citizens in complex, diverse societies.

Above all, this program underscores Stanford’s commitment to preparing students for today’s increasingly interconnected world.

Our goal is to spur the design of courses that can appeal to large numbers of students and will engage first-year students. We particularly welcome proposals that feature cross-disciplinary teaching partnerships and co-curricular activities that engage students in learning beyond the classroom. Examples include, but are not limited to, field trips, guest lectures, and seminars. View a list of courses that have received funding in the past.

Awards will support the development of courses that meet the following COLLEGE requirement learning goals:

  • Develop the critical and ethical thinking skills and knowledge base for responsible local, national, and global citizenship.
  • Develop in students an awareness of cultural diversity, as well as cultural self-awareness, and the ability to recognize connections between cultural, economic, and social practices across countries.
  • Provide students with a set of methods for conducting comparative or systemic studies of global phenomena.

Strong preference will be given to faculty planning to offer Global Perspectives courses through Stanford’s Civic, Liberal, and Global Education requirement (COLLEGE).

Why Teach in COLLEGE?

Teaching in COLLEGE offers faculty the exciting opportunity to engage with first-year students, pedagogic development and support, and collaboration with postdoctoral teaching fellows.
