Student spotlight: Cameron Ramos

While taking Politics in Iran, Cameron Ramos '18 wrote a sentiment analysis program and scraped software to analyze and correlate trends between the Twitter feeds of Iranian government officials and the country’s presidential elections as well as the Iran nuclear deal.

A computer science major, Cameron found Iranian studies courses engaging, and decided to pursue the Global Studies minor as a counterbalance to his technical coursework.

“The program was transformative for me and the classes were among the best I took at Stanford,” he says. “I believe I've gained a much more nuanced understanding about how our world works which will be immensely helpful in the future.”

Curious about his mother’s experience as a Marxist counter revolutionary during the Iranian revolution, he conducted a series of interviews with her for his capstone project, titled “When Schoolgirls Become Marxist Counter-Revolutionaries.” A slightly modified version of his final paper, including excerpts of the interviews, is on Medium.

Next year, Cameron will be taking a leave of absence from his coterminal computer science master’s program to join the flight software team at SpaceX.
