Student spotlight: Alexis Kallen

During Stanford's 127th Commencement, Alexis Kallen '18, received the 2018 Lloyd W. Dinkelspiel Award for Distinctive Contributions to Undergraduate Education.

Kallen, who graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in political science and minors in Spanish and human rights, is passionate about the rights of girls and women in developing countries. For her honor’s thesis, she examined the reasoning behind the lack of genocidal rape findings in the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

Outside of the classroom, she served as chair of Stanford in Government, an International Advisor to Girl Up (a UN Foundation), the Co-Chair and Founder of the Scary Path Task Force, and a student assistant for the Handa Center for Human Rights & International Justice. During her summers, she interned for her congresswoman in Washington, DC, conducted independent research in Rwanda on genocidal rape, and interned with the Justice Centre Hong Kong, a nonprofit law firm focused on refugees in Hong Kong.

In the fall of 2017, Kallen delivered remarks at the 127th Convocation.

Kallen is also a 2017 Truman Scholar and a 2018 Rhodes Scholar, where she is studying for the MPhil in Development Studies at the University of Oxford.
