Remy Charles is graduating this year with a degree in international relations and a minor in global studies, with a specialization in European studies. Read the Q&A below to learn more about her undergraduate experience.

Why did you decide to major in international relations and minor in global studies?

I chose to study international relations out of a deep interest in the complex dynamics that shape global politics, including diplomacy, conflict, governance, and human rights. With particular focus on European studies, international law, and AI governance, I am committed to examining critical global challenges and exploring solutions through research, policy analysis, and international cooperation. My academic and extracurricular pursuits reflect a dedication to advancing democracy, accountability, and peace in an increasingly interconnected world.

Tell us about your favorite experience as a global studies minor.

My favorite experience through the global studies program was my internship at Renew Europe in the European Parliament. This opportunity allowed me to apply the knowledge gained in my international relations and global studies coursework to real-world policymaking at the heart of the European Union. Working alongside policymakers and government delegations from across the globe deepened my understanding of European governance, transnational cooperation, and the complexities of advancing democratic values across diverse member states. The experience affirmed my commitment to pursuing a career focused on international cooperation and public service.

As you reflect on your time at Stanford, what are you most proud of?

I am most proud of the way I have been able to combine academic work with meaningful real-world engagement during my time at Stanford. Whether through research, internships, or campus initiatives, I have sought out opportunities to apply what I’ve learned to pressing global issues, particularly in the areas of human rights, international law, and European affairs. I am proud of the intellectual growth, resilience, and sense of purpose I have developed, as well as the connections I’ve built with mentors and peers who share a commitment to public service and global impact.

What are your plans after graduation?

After college, I plan to pursue a career in public service with a focus on advancing human rights and international law. Building on my academic background and practical experiences, I am eager to contribute to efforts that promote justice, accountability, and democratic governance across borders. Whether through work in international organizations, NGOs, or legal institutions, I hope to play a meaningful role in addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing the international community.

How has your minor in global studies changed your understanding of the world and prepared you for your next steps?

Minoring in global studies has truly broadened how I see the world, helping me understand the cultural, political, and historical forces that shape global challenges. It has pushed me to think more deeply about questions of power, justice, and inequality across different regions. More importantly, it has prepared me to approach my next steps in public service with a global mindset, greater cultural awareness, and the ability to engage thoughtfully in the fields of human rights and international law.
