The France-Stanford Center announces 2025 student prizes

The France-Stanford Center is pleased to announce the 2025 student recipients for the James Baldwin and Louise Bourgeois Prizes.
The winner of the James Baldwin Essay Prize for a research essay by a Ph.D. student in Humanities Arts or Social Sciences is Audrey Martel-Dion. There are two winners of the 2025 Louise Bourgeois Essay Prize for a research essay by a graduate student in Humanities, Arts or Social Sciences: Lucy Stark and Haby Ka.
2025 James Baldwin Essay Prize
Audrey Martel-Dion, a history Ph.D. student in the early modern Europe field, won for her research essay “Undefined Sexes in Undisclosed Locations: Displacing the Hermaphrodite Society in Early Modern French Thought.” Read more about Audrey.
2025 Louise Bourgeois Essay Prize
Lucy Stark, a history Ph.D. student in the transnational, global, and international field, won for her research essay “Capturing Selling Using and Liberating: The Four Acts of Senegalese Childhood Slavery in the Late 1850s.” Read more about Lucy.
Haby Ka, a first-year Ph.D. student in French studies, won for her research essay “The Citizenship Question in Colonial Algeria and the Cremieux Decree of 1870.” Read more about Haby.
