Organization Profile: 

 Lalela provides educational arts for at-risk youth to spark creative thinking and awaken the entrepreneurial spirit. It is the arts education nonprofit in South Africa and is comprised of about 30 staff members. Our head office in South Africa, which is comprised of 23 facilitators, our Programme Managers, Programme Administrator, Events & Relation Manager, and our Executive Director.

Work description:

There are three possible areas of work experience available:

  • Communications – Produce content for Lalela’s social media platforms, online journal, newsletter and other platforms. This includes documenting student success stories through photographs, videos, and interviews. This position requires a tech savvy individual with good communication and writing skills as well as a good sense of design. 
  • Fundraising Development – Help expand Lalela’s fundraising strategy: research foundations, institutions and corporates that are aligned with Lalela’s objectives, and write grant applications.  This position requires a highly independent and organized individual with excellent writing and analytical skills.
  • Arts Facilitation/Curriculum Development – Co-facilitate visual arts and/or music workshops primarily in the after-school hours, Monday through Thursday.  Mornings would be spent alongside the facilitation team doing final preparations for the day’s classes. On Fridays, all facilitators meet to share best practices and prepare for the following week.  This position requires an empathic team player with great listening skills

15 –August 15, 2020):  Five days a week (09:30AM- 05:30PM)

Work Attire:    Casual, but culturally appropriate

Local Language (Not required): Xhosa, Afrikaans.

Eligibility: 
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and coterms who are undergraduates in all majors, including undeclared. Coterm students must still have undergraduate status.
  • Applicants must be current Stanford students during the internship period. Seniors must postpone graduation paperwork until the internship ends, but may participate in commencement. For summer graduation requirements, including details regarding enrollment requirements and information about participation in the June commencement ceremonies, students should contact their major department's student services office and Registrar's Office for graduation quarter petition.
  • Preferably, before beginning their internships, selected candidates should have taken at least one course regarding the internship region. The course can be taken in the spring quarter.
