Looking for funding for travel or research?  Many of SGS's programs and centers offer fellowships, internships, scholarships and other funding to students at Stanford. Following are brief descriptions of the opportunities available; for more details click on the program or center name.

The Susan Ford Dorsey Fellowship provides financial support for Ph.D. candidates to undertake field research in Africa in support of their dissertation projects.

CREEES: Academic Year FLAS Fellowships for Professional School Students

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships, administered by the US Department of Education, provide full tuition for one year plus a stipend to students undergoing advanced training in a designated foreign language in combination with area studies, international studies, or international aspects of professional studies.

Academic Year FLAS Fellowships provide $10,000 toward tuition plus a $5000 stipend for one Stanford undergraduate each year undergoing advanced training in a designated foreign language in combination with area studies, international studies, or international aspects of professional studies.

CREEES: Globalizing Eurasia Grant

Globalizing Eurasia Grant for multi-country summer research in two or more countries in Russia, Central and East Europe, the Caucasus, or Central Asia or in this region and another. Projects might involve, for example, travel in Russia and China, the Caucasus and Turkey, or some other combination of countries. Up to $7,000 in funding.

Summer FLAS Fellowships provide summer tuition plus $2500 stipends to students enrolled in intensive summer language programs in the US or abroad. Professional school students, especially in law and education, as well as graduate students in H&S, Earth Sciences, and Engineering are strongly encouraged to apply.

East Asian Studies - Academic Year East Asia FLAS Fellowship

US Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships provide $10,000 in tuition and a $5,000 stipend for undergraduate students in any discipline for intensive language study at Stanford during the academic year.

Academic-Year East Asia FLAS Fellowships for Graduate Students provide tuition and stipend for students in M.A. or Ph.D. programs who plan to undertake intensive advanced language study in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean.

East Asian Studies - Academic-Year IUC Japanese Language Study Fellowship

CEAS has secured special funding to provide academic-year fellowships (program tuition plus stipend) to attend the academic-year program at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama. Both U.S. Citizens and international students are eligible to apply. This funding application is separate from application to the IUC program—students must still apply for admission to IUC according to their posted deadlines.

East Asian Studies - Conference Travel Grant

These ad hoc grants support Stanford graduate students presenting East-Asia related papers at major academic or professional conferences. Awards of up to $500 are paid as reimbursement after completion of travel to offset hotel fees, conference registration, and travel costs. Both U.S. and international students are eligible to apply. Funds available first-come, first-served until exhausted.

East Asian Studies - Continuing Student Academic Year Fellowship

CEAS M.A. Continuing Student Academic-Year Fellowships allocates a small amount of funding for continuing M.A. students in the form of tuition-only fellowships, or in some cases tuition plus small stipend for up to three quarters.

East Asian Studies - Fellowship for Study of Women in Asia

Competitive fellowship for the Study of Women in Asia provides stipend plus three quarters TGR tuition for one academic year, to support dissertation research or write-up on topics related to women in Asia.

East Asian Studies - Korean Studies Prize for Writing

The Korean Studies Program Prize for Writing in Korean recognizes outstanding examples of writing in an essay, term paper, or thesis produced during the current academic year in any discipline within the area of Korean Studies. The first place winner will receive $1,000 and the winning essay will be published in the Stanford Journal of East Asian Affairs.

Grants provide continuing registered Stnford M.A. and Ph.D. students funding related to summer work such as formal language training, required coursework, field work, research, or dissertation write-up.

Europe Center - Austria Visitor Program

Support for Stanford graduate students enrolled in a doctoral program in one of Stanford's seven schools, with special emphasis on the Social Sciences and Humanities.  The scholarships are especially appropriate for graduate students who have reached the advanced stages of their doctoral research.

Europe Center - Graduate Student Grant Competition

Funds are available for Ph.D. candidates across a wide range of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences to prepare for dissertation research and to conduct research on approved dissertation projects. The Europe Center also supports early graduate students who wish to determine the feasibility of a dissertation topic or acquire training relevant for that topic.

Jewish Studies

The Dr. Bernard Kaufman Award will be given to an undergraduate student engaged in research on Jews in modernity, with a preference for research focusing on contemporary Jewish life. $1,000.

Developed in collaboration with the Haas Center for Public Service, this new program, supported by the Koret Foundation, offers up to two fellowships per year to support projects that aim to address a social welfare, cultural, educational or environmental need in partnership with a Jewish communal organization. The Donald and Robin Kennedy Undergraduate Award honors the best essay written by an undergraduate at Stanford on a Jewish theme, and offers a prize of $500.

Current Stanford graduate students specializing in Jewish Studies are eligible for several forms of supplementary financial support, plus opportunities for additional funding for language, research, or conferences. Funds are limited and granted on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Koret Award will be given to the best essay written in Hebrew by an undergraduate at Stanford, and offers a prize of $250.

Jewish Studies - Nelee Langmuir Award

The Nelee Langmuir Award will be given to a student working in Modern European History with a preference given to work on the Holocaust, and offers a prize of $500. In alternate years, the award will be given to an undergraduate student who shows excellence and commitment to studying French.

Jewish Studies: Short Story Contest

The Taube Center for Jewish Studies invites all Stanford undergraduate students to submit a short story (4000 words maximum) to the first annual short story contest sponsored by the Taube Center for Jewish Studies. Stories may draw on any aspects of Jewish life, history, and culture, and address any aspect of Jewish experience - historical, religious, non-religious, political, artistic or personal - from within a Jewish perspective or from the perspective of another culture. Grand Prize: $600; Second Prize: $300; Third Prize: $150.

Latin American Studies: Academic Year FLAS Fellowship

Academic year fellowships provide full tuition for the academic year and a $15,000 stipend for graduate students undergoing advanced training in designated foreign languages in combination with Latin American Studies and international aspects of professional studies (law, education). The term of a fellowship is for one academic year. Applicants in multiple-year programs must reapply each year.
