Toward Socially and Environmentally Sustainable Oceans: A Discussion with the Indonesia Ocean Justice Initiative

Environmental and social sustainability are often considered in isolation, but the linkages between the two are increasingly clear, especially when it comes to the world’s oceans. The Jakarta-based Indonesia Ocean Justice Initiative (IOJI) works at this critical intersection, supporting the Government of Indonesia to implement equitable ocean governance measures, advocating for relevant policies locally and internationally, and empowering fisheries workers to access their human rights. For the past several years, Stanford researchers from the Center for Human Rights and International Justice and Center for Ocean Solutions have been working with colleagues at the Indonesian Ocean Justice Initiative on a project with the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation and its member companies aimed at eliminating modern slavery from supply chains as part of their commitments in the Tuna Traceability Declaration.

This event is part of Stanford Global Studies' Oceanic Imaginaries, a new, multi-year initiative that adopts the world’s oceans as an analytical framework for advancing cross-regional, interdisciplinary research on timely global topics. The 2022-23 academic year focuses on the Indian Ocean, featuring courses, lectures, exhibits, screenings, and performances that engage with the societies, cultures, geographies, and histories of the Indian Ocean world.
