Paul Phillips conducts the SSO's California premiere of Transcend, a new work by Zhou Tian, co-commissioned by the SSO as part of a consortium of 13 orchestras throughout the U.S. It celebrates the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, which occurred on 10 May 1869 when Leland Stanford drove in the Golden Spike that completed the track. Also on this all-American, transportation-themed program are works by John Adams, George Gershwin, and Samuel Barber. | On Friday, a preconcert talk with Zhou Tian, Gordon Chang, and Paul Phillips will take place on the main stage at 6:30 PM.
