Speaker: Saba Riazi

In Saba Riazi’s new film “Ice Cream,” Maryam, a 30 year old woman in Tehran, lost her job and apartment, and is forced to move in with her grandmother. She is trying hard to make things work and in doing so, she faces herself, eating ice-cream. This funny, semi-autobiographical film seamlessly combines animation and live action into a poetic meditation about identity and belonging.

Saba Riazi is pursuing her MFA in creative writing at CUNY's Queens College and teaching as an adjunct professor. She wrote, directed, edited, and produced “Ice Cream,” her feature film debut, in 2018.

The film is in Farsi with English subtitles. After the screening, Saba will lead a discussion about the social, financial, and political challenges of making the film and engage in a Q&A with the audience.

This film is part of the annual Stanford Global Studies Summer Film Festival running most Wednesdays from June 13 to September 12. This year's festival features 10 films from around the world that focus on the theme “Friends & Family: Tales from Near and Far.” For more information on this year's festival, please visit the SGS Summer 2018 Film Festival Lineup
