About the talk:

This talk examines an emerging body of scholarships concerning the Chinese people and their maritime world.  It asks the question: What are the compelling issues that are fueling this research energy?  Drawing on the highlights of a recent workshop "Maritime Asia: the Securitization of the China Sea" (Berkeley, May 14-15, 2018), this talk approaches the maritime as a border-crossing as well as international arena. After a brief review of the long history of Chinese engagement with the sea, it will turn to consider the transformation of the Chinese maritime from the perspectives of the changing role of the Chinese state.

About the speaker:

Wen-hsin Yeh is a historian of late imperial and modern China. Her research focuses on organized bodies of ideas and their institutionalized forms of practices.  Among her published works are Shanghai Splendor (University of California Press, 2007) and Minguo zhishiren: licheng yu tupu  [Republican Chinese Intellectuals: Passages and Trajectories] (Sanlian, Beijing: 2016).  During the current year she is an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University.
