Join us for a discussion on the Chilean constitutional reform process with Rodrigo Delaveau, a former Deputy Justice of the Constitutional Court of Chile. In 2019, Chileans voted to initiate a constitutional reform process to replace their existing document, which has roots in the Pinochet dictatorship. The process captured global attention because of its attempt to incorporate a new barrage of environmental and social rights. In a surprising turn of events, however, Chileans recently rejected the proposed constitution by a wide margin. The country has now been plunged into uncertainty with the young President Boric vowing to continue the reform process. Professor and former Deputy Justice Rodrigo Delaveau will share a first hand view of this exciting yet controversial process in person. He has been deeply involved in the process and is flying out from Chile to give Stanford students an update.

This is the inaugural event in a year-long series of talks by foreign Supreme Court Justices, sponsored by the Global Trends in Judicial Reform Policy Lab (Professor Zambrano) as part of the Global Research Workshop Series run by Stanford Global Studies, with support from the Stanford Latinx Law Student Association (SLLSA) and the International Law Society (ILS). Chile is a fertile ground to think about questions of comparative constitutional law, judicial reform, and transitions from authoritarianism to democracy. The Global Trends in Judicial Reform Policy Lab in the Winter will be studying Chile, among other Latin American countries, to assess the growth and preservation of judicial independence.

Justice Rodrigo Delaveau received his JD and LLM Degree summa cum laude from the P. Universidad Católica de Chile, and his LLM and PhD from the University of Chicago Law School. He has been a Law Professor for more than twenty years - teaching in both Spanish and English, as well as lecturer in national and international seminars, and regular advisor in several bills in his home country of Chile. In 2019 he was elected Deputy Justice for the Constitutional Court of Chile for a three-year term. Besides being a Law Professor, he is a Legal Counsel in Public Law affairs at Morales & Besa in Santiago, Chile.

Please RSVP through the following form by the end of the day on Wednesday, September 28th, so that we can get an accurate headcount for lunch. All are welcome to hear Justice Delaveau speak, regardless of RSVP! Lunch will be held in Crocker Garden at Stanford Law School beginning at 12:45 on October 4th, and Justice Delaveau will speak in Room 280B of the Law School Classroom building beginning at noon.
