Speaker:

In the last 10 years a wave of judicial and fiscal exiles have flooded Washington D.C.. The latest being Guatemala’s top anti-corruption prosecutor Juan Francisco Sandoval fled the country in late July of 2021, spurring a public and international outcry. The once bright prospects of Guatemalan efforts to promote accountability and transparency, spearheaded by the internationally praised International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) that helped unravel corruption at the highest levels of Guatemala’s political system, now seem to be a thing of the past. In this two-speaker series we will address the implications for the most outstanding representatives of justice to be in exile in a so-called democracy. Join us in welcoming Juan Francisco Sandoval ex-prosecutor (October 19) and Claudia Escobar ex-magistrate (date: tbd) in a dialogue to understand what happens when corruption takes control over the rule of law and its effects in democracy. Please note the speaker series will be conducted in Spanish.
