The Global Educators Network (GEN) will host an Educators Inquiry Meetup on the following inquiry question: what challenges and opportunities do community college educators face in launching and sustaining global studies programs? Ideas to explore include:

  • Building a global studies curriculum
  • Navigating curriculum and articulation issues
  • Building student and faculty community
  • The changing landscape of global studies programs nationally

Guest Speakers:

Dr. Julie Jenkins is Faculty Director of the Foothill College Global Studies Program. As a community college professor, anthropologist, and qualitative researcher, Julie has experience working with communities of all backgrounds, in the U.S. and international settings, including classrooms, correctional facilities, shelters for the unhoused and victims of domestic violence. With that comes the belief that anthropology provides questions that can be applied to many international topics viewed through a global studies lens. Specifically, her research looks at the intersection between West African indigenous religious and transnational flows of ideas and resources centered on human rights and contemporary forms of slavery.

Dr. Kathryn Maurer is an Anthropology Instructor at Foothill College and Faculty Coordinator of the newly formed Foothill Office of Global Experiential Learning. She is also currently the District Academic Senate President for the Foothill-De Anza Community College District. Kathryn has spent many years living, studying and working abroad, and has conducted fieldwork in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Ecuador, Italy, Greece, Spain, Ireland and the Southwest and Bay Area of the United States. Before joining Foothill College in 2011, she directed college semester abroad programs in Greece and Spain, and worked as an applied anthropologist promoting cultural competency in the public sector in California human services agencies. Kathryn was the faculty lead in the creation of the Global Studies Program at Foothill College.

This event is free to all educators. Please note that registration is required.
