The relation between Cuba and United States is a long and complex one. Over two hundred years of economic and cultural interaction and colliding national projects eventually led to a conflict extended for more than fifty years. The Obama administration started a major change in US policy towards Cuba, opening a process of engagement and negotiation, in search for normalization of relations. The election of Donald Trump for the oval office created a new set circumstances, compromising the continuity of the process. An analysis of the factors shaping US policies and politics provides a better understanding of the evolution of the process, and its potential future development. Finally, the impact, current and potential, of the changes in the relationship during the last three years have become an important variable in the behaviour of the Cuban economy.
