Speaker: Rebecca Wall, PhD Candidate, Department of History, Susan Ford Dorsey Dissertation Fieldwork Fellow

Rebecca Wall is a PhD candidate in African History.  Her research investigates colonial and postcolonial Senegal River management practices, ideologies, and organizations. She considers how postcolonial West African nations balanced their individual sovereignty with the ecological and geographic imperative to jointly manage shared water resources, as well as the legacies of colonial Senegal River management practices for postcolonial efforts. Rebecca is also interested in the gaps between planning and practice and how these are linked to the unintended consequences of development projects on local populations and ecologies. Rebecca has undertaken research in Senegal and Mali, and is currently conducting dissertation research in Senegal and France.

Rebecca's research has been supported by the Fulbright-Hays DDRA, the Stanford Center for African Studies, the Social Science Research Council, the West African Research Association, and the Stanford Center for International Security and Cooperation.  In her free time, Rebecca trains for and competes in triathlons.
