Speaker: Kathryn Takabvirwa, Teaching Affiliate, Anthropology, Stanford University

Kathryn is an Anthropologist who specializes in migration and governance in Southern Africa. She graduated cum laude from Yale with a double major in Anthropology and African Studies. She has an MA in Anthropology from Stanford, and an MA in Forced Migration Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand. Before coming to Stanford to do her PhD in Anthropology, Kathryn worked as a researcher at the African Center for Migration and Society, in Johannesburg, on projects on security, xenophobia, and social cohesion. Her doctoral dissertation is entitled: “On the Threshing Floor: Roadblocks and the Policing of Everyday Life in Post-Crisis Zimbabwe.” Her work has received numerous fellowships and awards, including the 2017 Bernard J. Spiegel Award for Creative Expression in Anthropology. In 2016, Kathryn was selected as a Mellon/American Council for the Learned Societies Dissertation Completion Fellow.

She studies the way conceptions of citizenship, the law, and the state are transformed in the face of constant policing. She hopes her work will contribute to the theorization of the state in Africa, the centering of African voices in the chronicling of the lives of Africans, and capturing something of the incredible wow of Zimbabwe.

The work she will present today has been funded by: the Center for African Studies, the National Science Foundation, the Wenner-Gren Foundation, the Social Sciences Research Council, the Vice Provost for Graduate Education's DDRO, the School of Humanities and Sciences' Graduate Research Opportunity Award, and the Stanford Anthropology Department.
