Reformed to Death: The Strange End of the USSR

Vladislav M. Zubok, Professor of International History at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Born and educated in Moscow, after 1993 he worked in the United States, first as a fellow at the National Security Archives in Washington DC, and then as professor at Temple University, Philadelphia. His recent books include A Failed Empire: the Soviet Union in the Cold War from Stalin to Gorbachev (University of North Carolina Press, 2007), Zhivago’s Children: The Last Russian Intelligentsia (Belknap Press, 2009), and The Idea of Russia. The Life and Work of Dmitry of Likhachev (I.B.Tauris, 2017). He has earned the Lionel Gelber Prize, the Marshall Shulman Prize of the American Association for Advancement of Slavic Studies, and the Arthur S. Link - Warren F. Kuehl Prize for Documentary Editing, Society of American Foreign Policy. He also worked with media, and was a leading Russian consultant for the CNN- Jeremy Isaacs Productions’ “Cold War,” a 24-hour documentary series (1995-1998). He is currently working on a new book with a provisional title “1991. Russia destroys the Soviet Union.”
