Increasing attention has been given to existing gender inequities in medical education and healthcare worldwide. Despite a surge in enrollment of women in medical school, surgery remains a largely male dominated field in Zimbabwe. This talk explores the paths that women are taking in Zimbabwe to address the bias that suggests women cannot play certain roles in the community and in professional life. Ms. Moyo outlines the challenges women in Zimbabwe face entering the surgical profession, and explains how this is changing. Research has shown that women perform as well as men in surgery, contributing to better surgical outcomes, improving patient care, and addressing inequality. Listen to Ms. Moyo's account of the initiatives being put in place to challenge the status quo and enable women to achieve their potential in the pursuit of careers in surgery.

Annete Moyo is finishing her medical degree at the University of Zimbabwe. She is currently visiting Stanford University on a clerkship and completing a rotation in Cardiothoracic surgery at the Palo Alto Veterans Administration hospital. She is founder of DREAM, a surgery interest group that mentors women in pursuit of surgical careers in Zimbabwe.
